Jordi LANDIER

I am a permanent researcher at the French National Institute of Research for Sustainable Development (IRD) since 2018 and based in SESSTIM research unit in Marseille. My research interests revolve around the transmission of infectious agents causing diseases (transmission mode, risk factors, dynamics) and how to apply this understanding to the development of efficient control/elimination interventions and strategies. My research combines geoepidemiological analyses and more classic epidemiology (cohorts etc...).

I completed a PhD in epidemiology at Institute Pasteur in Paris and at Centre Pasteur of Cameroon, on the transmission of Mycobacterium ulcerans, the etiologic agent of Buruli ulcer (2010-2014). During my post-doctoral fellowship at SMRU (Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit, Thailand), I was the epidemiologist of the Malaria Elimination Task Force program, a large regional Plasmodium falciparum elimination program in Eastern Myanmar (2015-2018).

Currently, I work on malaria in the Sahelian region (partners: MRTC OK Doumbo, Bamako, Mali, ISED & IRD, Dakar, Senegal). I am interested in the role of asymptomatic Plasmodium carriers in malaria transmission and persistence, to evaluate if interventions targeting these individuals can accelerate the elimination of malaria. With partners Issaka Sagara (MRTC) and Elhadj Ba (IRD Dakar), we conducted a one-year observational cohort study in Eastern Senegal, Central Mali and Northern Mali to monitor parasite prevalence and incidence in the general population in the dry and rainy seasons (MARS project, funded by AMIdex, 2019-2022).
Based on these results, we partnered with Jean Louis Ndiaye (UIDT, Thies, Senegal), Adama Faye (UCAD, Dakar, Senegal), and Valéry Ridde (CEPED, IRD) to design and conduct an intervention study (begining in 2024). From the public health side, we aim to evaluate the effect of decreasing carriage on subsequent malaria burden. From the fundamental research side, we will investigate the different dynamics of the Plasmodium reservoir with and without intervention. A collaboration with Antoine Claessens (LPHI, Montpellier, France) is developping for the genomic analysis of the Plasmodium reservoir.

I am also involved in a One Health study of mpox virus epidemiology in Central African Republic in partnership with Institut Pasteur in Paris and in Bangui, as well as Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle. I also maintain collaborations with SMRU involving research project on malaria and environment, as well as access to healthcare on the Thai-Myanmar border (partner: SMRU, Mae Sot, Thailand).

I supervise Master students every year, originating from diverse programs related to either data science, epidemiology and public health (6 students since 2020). I also co-supervise PhD students under the direction of Pr Jean Gaudart (1 student 2020-2023 : , 1 student 2022-2025).
