Experiences:
Juste Goungounga is an Associate Professor in Biostatistics and Health Data Science at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Santé Publique (EHESP School of Public Health). He is a researcher within the RSMS team (Inserm U1309 / Arènes UMR 6051) and a member of the MétiS Department. A medical doctor by training, he specialized in quantitative public health methods with a master’s degree in quantitative and econometric methods for health research, followed by a PhD in biostatistics from Aix-Marseille University. His work bridges clinical expertise, statistical methodology, and the analysis of large-scale health administrative databases. His research focuses on statistical modelling in chronic disease epidemiology, particularly cancer and chronic kidney disease, with a strong emphasis on relative survival, excess hazard modelling, and causal inference for care pathways. He develops methods to quantify health inequalities, and contributes to methodological innovation using cancer registry data as well as large-scale French administrative databases such as the SNDS and PMSI. Before joining EHESP in 2022, he was a Fondation ARC postdoctoral fellow working on cure models applied to the ‘right to be forgotten’ in cancer survivorship.
Teaching:
He teaches biostatistics, survival analysis, and health data science using PMSI and SNDS in the Master’s and postgraduate programmes at EHESP.
Research interests:
- Relative survival and excess hazard models (non-comparability correction, flexible hazard modelling)
- Cure models and time-to-cure estimation
- Statistical modelling using large-scale administrative health databases (SNDS, PMSI)
