Description

Hazardous heat is an accelerating threat to health and economic well-being in West Africa. In Ghana, it is already linked to higher mortality, adverse birth outcomes, and reduced labor productivity. Despite these risks, we lack a fine-scale understanding of how hazardous heat varies across space and time.

This presentation introduces the Heat Extremes & Risk Observatory – Ghana (HERO-GH), a new 3-year project that combines in-situ monitoring, climate modeling, and environmental epidemiology to address these gaps. In partnership with the Kintampo Health Research Centre (KHRC) and the Ghana Ministry of Health, HERO-GH aims to generate actionable insights to reduce heat-related harm in Ghana and inform strategies across West Africa.

Keywords: climate change, heat waves, west africa, mortality, pregnancy
