Research question:

Of the 281 million international migrants worldwide, 169 million migrant workers contribute fully to the economies of their host and home countries. However, migrant workers are often excluded from social protection schemes. In Thailand, out of 4-5 million migrants, an estimated 1 to 2 millions are undocumented.

Method:

M-FUND community workers will invite newly registered, eligible members to participate to the health check-up. Participants will be referred to the nearest hospital to receive the check-up, involving clinical examination, risk factors and mental health questionnaires, as well as laboratory tests and a chest x-ray. Endpoints will document feasibility (e.g proportion of participants presenting at check-up appointment out of those who expressed interest) and proportion of participants presenting abnormal clinical, mental health, or laboratory test results. In parallel, the retrospective analysis of M-FUND database will provide an overview of health conditions occurring within 3 to 6 months of registration in all M-FUND members.

Research prospects:

This pilot study will build the evidence base for a broader intervention study aimed at improving health of migrant communities in Thailand.
