PhD grants in Public Health at Aix-Marseille University

Who is eligible?

The successful candidates will hold a Master degree in biostatistics, medical informatics, epidemiology, public health, economy, or social sciences in medicine. Their master degree must be obtained from universities (either in France or abroad) other than Aix-Marseille University, with excellent academic records. Each selected candidate will be supervised by a member of SESSTIM Research Unit (“Economic and Social Sciences of Health & Medical Information Processing”), Aix-Marseille University. Their  work will be  financed  to carry out the research within the framework of a PhD programme.

Who can be thesis supervisor and how to find him/her?

The supervisor must be a member of SESSTIM Research Unit, accredited to supervise research (HDR diploma). Candidates are required to contact potential supervisors before the application.

There are two options to apply for the PhD grants:

  • Applicants can submit their own research program, in connection with the research themes of SESSTIM’s Research Unit by directly contacting  potential thesis directors* to submit their topics.
  • Applicants can apply to a project proposed by a member of SESSTIM’s Research Unit by directly contacting potential thesis directors* to apply for the topics they might propose.

* It is responsibility of candidate to ensure that potential thesis directors hold HDR.

What is the amount of the scholarship?

According to applicable rules in Aix-Marseille University, the monthly salary will be equivalent to the amount allocated to doctoral students funded by a grant from the French MHER* corresponding to 1415 € per month during the three years of PhD (net monthly remuneration subject to change in social security charge). The beneficiary must have a bank account in France.

* MHER: Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

Should the research work take place only within Aix-Marseille University?

Not necessarily.

PhD grants may be offered in co-direction with a co-director from a research institute in a candidate's country. In this case, transnational research plan between SESSTIM Research Unit and the research institute of the candidate's country can thus be set up. Alternations of 6 months periods can be considered. Such mobility allows insight into different working environments.

As part of the MEDSe-PubHealth project particular attention must be paid to research projects involving such partnerships.

Who makes the selection?

These grants are awarded by a committee of teachers and researchers of the specialized courses EISIS, MQERS, and SPSD of the Public Health Master of Aix-Marseille University.
